Hi guys
Have you already given the GMAT once (or twice) and are still being ravaged by verbal questions? You think that you did everything and still scored below expectations? I went through the same journey and somehow came on top.First Attempt:I heard so many friends scoring well on the GMAT that I thought it will not too tough, if not fairly easy. So I sat about a month before the exam and completed the OG, the verbal review and gave a couple of powerprep tests. I scored a 710 on the mock. So I gave my first attempt: BANG: FIRST FAILURE: 660. I was in despair, there was a difference of 50 points in the mock and the actual GMAT.Second Attempt:I took this GMAT affair seriously now. In came CrackVerbal. Arun’s sessions helped me strengthen my previously haphazard concepts. I completed all the sheets, books and advanced docs diligently. I had literally crammed up the OG and verbal review till now. I gave both the powerprep free mocks (I-740, II-750), Kaplan-free test(740), Manhattan-3 tests (680-720). I was ready ready this time. In fact, I had written 6 AWAs and practiced over 100 IR questions as well. This might give you an insight on how prepared I was. When I saw the computer screen on the real GMAT day, I was shattered, heart-broken and felt lost. I scored a 700(Q49, V35). Not that 700 is a bad score, but again I was below par on my expectations.So what really went wrong? Retrospecting, 2 things I failed on:1. Full test sittings are very very important. Always give Full tests. DO NOT SKIP AWA WHENEVER YOU GIVE FULL TESTS. Everything before quant and verbal takes a toll on you and you need to be ready for that.2. Simulate the test environment. Try to use CrackVerbal’s slots for taking exams in their centres, especially if you have nervous breakdowns like me.Third Attempt:With a very heavy heart, I paid another 16k from my pocket. All I did this time was, give 5 complete tests of Kaplan (AWA-verbal) and completed the Kaplan Quizzes. Far from nervous, I was indifferent for this attempt. I promised myself that whatever be the score, I will be satisfied. I played it like Dhoni, with a cool head and a strong temperament. I ended with a well balanced score of 740 (Q-50, V40, IR-7)TIPS:1. When you are ready ready for the GMAT exam, time will never bother you neither on verbal nor on quant. Not even on the IR. If it is bothering you, then you are yet to optimize and reach your best.2. I have heard a lot of people say that their material is finished. If you are in this category, let me tell you there’s enough material out there for you to do for 2 years and never finish. Contact me IF YOU DISAGREE.3. LAST DAY JITTERS: These are the most painful. Have a strategy and tell yourself “GMAT is not the end to the world”. DO NOT PRESSURIZE YOURSELF.4. Last but not the least, please stop double checking and doubly reassuring that you have marked the right answer. A HUGE WASTE OF TIME.Thank you CrackVerbal and Arun for always helping out!!!Cheer and best wishes to everyone who are next in line.RegardsKaran Viraniemail: karanvirani90@gmail.com- 3897 views

hey aanchal,
we know thattotal no. of students = Students in chem + students in bio – stud in both + stud in neither=> 200 = 130 + 150 – x + 30=> x = 110Since the question mentions “at least”, we know that 30 students is not an absolute value, it is the minimum. But the max. no. of students in both streams cannot be greater than 130, since the total students in chem = 130.hence (d) should be the answer.- 1474 views

In an equation like this,m(m+1)(m-1)= 380 (m-1). NEVER CANCEL (m-1) on both sides, even m = 1 is a possible solution- 1753 views

Hi Mahesh
The question string says “CANNOT BE TRUE”. So if the statement holds true for even one value, then it cannot be deemed untrue.In option E, substitute a = -0.5.-1<-0.5Hence E is a possibility.Hope this clarifies your doubt- 1721 views

Hi Surbhi
From the first equation, we can clearly say that one of the roots is 1.Now we can rewrite the equation as(m-1)(am2 + bm + c) = m3 – 381m + 380Expand the LHS to get a= 1, b=1 and c= – 380Hence the given equation can be rewritten as (m-1)(m2 + m – 380) = 0Solving the quadratic equation by the quadratic formula, we get (m2 + m – 380) = (m + 20)(m-19)Hence (1)alone is insufficient.Using only the second equation, we cannot find the answer. But it can help us eliminate two values of m. Hence using both, we can say that m = – 20.So answer is (c)Hope this helps.- 1753 views

Hi Mohammad
I think the question states whether a18 > 16 and not a18 > a16.Hey Arpan, before I answer the question, can you also share the source of the question?(1) Condition : a10 > a9which meansar9 > ar8 (let the first term be a)=> ar9 – ar8 > 0=> ar8 (r – 1)>0=> r – 1 > 0 (Since ar8 will always be positive)= r > 1Even if r>1, we cannot say a18 > 16. Hence statement (1) alone is insufficient.(2) Condition : a9 = 2a5which meansar8 = 2ar4=> r4(r4 – 2) = 0=> r = 21/4 or r = -21/4If r = -21/4, a18 < 16If r = 21/4 a18 > 16Hence Hence statement (2) alone is insufficient.If we combine the two results obtained i.e., then r = 21/4Hence both statements together are sufficient. The answer should be (c)Hope this helps- 1496 views

To find the Median of a set , we arrange the numbers in their value order and the middle element is the Median.
Let the number of projects in company Z be 100. Now 25% have 4 or more employees. And 35% have 2 or lesser employees. Now the Median will be average of 50th and 51st project. And employees per project for both of these is 3. Hence the Median will be 3.Hope this helps.- 1546 views

Hey Arpan
See, forget the question, assume Line L’s equation as y = 3x + 2. Slope = 3. Now consider the second equation, it says when y = 0, x= b/m = (2/3). It just means that the Line M passes through (2/3,0). How can you say the slope is 3,4,5 or 6 or something else?
Did I make my point clear?- 1451 views
