Karan,

Being a inference based question,we should look only for facts presented in the argument.
In this case, the argument doesn’t mention that lack of sunlight lowers the level of serotonin. It only conveys that carbohydrates can boost the brain’s level of serotonin.
On the other hand, option d clearly points out that ‘some’ antidepressants act on brain by changing the brain’s levels of serotonin.I think D is correct.
What is the source of this question?
Thanks.

Baking for winter holidays is tradition that may have a sound medical basis. In midwinter, when days are short, many people suffer from a specific type of seasonal depression caused by lack of sunlight. Carbohydrates, both sugars and starches, boost the brain’s levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that improve the mood. In this respect, carbohydrates act on the brain in the same way as some antidepressants. Thus, eating holiday cookies may provide an effective form of self-prescribed medication.
Which one of the following can be properly inferred from the passage?

(A) Seasonal depression is one of the most easily treated forms of depression.

(B) Lack of sunlight lowers the level of serotonin in the brain.

(C) People are more likely to be depressed in midwinter than at other times of the year.

(D) Some antidepressants act by changing the brain’s level of serotonin.

(E) Raising the level of neurotransmitters in the brain effectively relieves depression.

The OA:B. I was inclined towards D. Can anyone explain why D is wrong? Actually, the guide says that OA:B, I am pretty sure there’s some mistake, checked at several other sites.

I agree with Ravikanth on the explanation.

Nowhere in the argument is it mentioned how anti depressants act. Hence D wouldn’t be the right fit 🙂

i think E woudl be the right answer, as our main point is to reduce depression caused in winter DUE to low sunlight.

So by baked cookies we providing depression relieves.
Can some please confirm the correct answer.

Hi Karan
E is not the right answer. From the stimulus we know that raising the level of a particular neurotransmitter “Serotonin” results in relieving depression.
But we don’t have information regarding  neurotransmitters other than the Serotonin.
Hope this helps 🙂

Hi all, I would like to confirm. Is the answer B or D?. The guide says its B, but D makes more sense to me.

 Hi Gurpreet
D is indeed the right answer.
It cannot be inferred that lack of sunlight lowers the level of serotonin. We only know that depression can be treated by increasing the levels of serotonin.
