Let’s eliminate answer choices with a singular plural disagreement. “An invasive” should correspond to “a plant” and not “plants”. Hence eliminate A and C.

Let’s examine the remaining answer choices. The structure of this sentence is “X does not make Y”. Whatever fits into “X” here should be, or should work as, a noun.

B: “Because it is genetically engineered” is a subordinate clause and does not function as a noun. Hence this answer choice is incorrect.

D: Correct answer. This is one way to use “being” correctly. Here it’s perfectly clear that the plant is being genetically engineered. “Being genetically engineered” functions as the subject.

E: “Make it any more likely that a plant will become” or “make a plant any more likely to become” are acceptable. We cannot combine them to get “make a plant any more likely that it will become”. Hence this answer choice is incorrect.

Tip: When you see three answer choices using “being”, do not eliminate any answer choice simply based on the knowledge that “being” is incorrect
