Whereas in mammals the tiny tubes that convey nutrients to bone cells are arrayed
in parallel lines, in birds the tubes form a random pattern.
(A) Whereas in mammals the tiny tubes that convey nutrients to bone cells
are arrayed in parallel lines, in birds the tubes
(B) Unlike mammals, in whom the tiny tubes that convey nutrients to bone
cells are arrayed in parallel lines, the tubes in birds
The answer given is A whereas I think it should be B.
We are talking about a dissimilarity, therefore unlike can be used. Please comment
Hi Deparbit,
Unlike can definitely be used. But like/unlike are used to compare nouns. If there’s mammals on one side of the comparison, there has to the noun mammals are compared to on the other side of the comparison.
Here in B, the construction is “Unlike mammals, the tubes”
Hope this helps!
