Data Sufficiency question from OG 2016 – 67

A merchant discounted the sale of a coat and the sale oprice of a sweater. Which of the 2 articles of clothing was discounted by the greater dollar amount?

  1. The percentage discount on the coat was 2% points greater than the % discount on the sweater.
  2. Before the discount the sale price of the coat was $10 less than the sale price of the sweater.

The answer for the question is E as per the OG – but the explanation is unclear.

I am getting the answer to be C.

What could be the values I am missing out ?

Hi Santhosh,

We can’t really say which discounted amount is greater without knowing the actual discounts.

Statement I is insufficient: This don’t give you any information about the sale price.

Statement II is insufficient: No information on the discounts.

Both Statements together is still insufficient,

Lets say,

cost of  coat = 100

cost of sweater = 110

Let say discount price on sweater is 10%

So, discount price on coat is 12%.

Discount value on sweater is 11.

and Discount value on coat is 12.

So coat discount is more than sweater discount.

Now, lets take

discount price on sweater as 20%

So, discount price on coat is 22%.

Discount value on sweater is 22

we can see that Discount value on coat is also 22.

Now, both discounted amounts are same.

So, we cant really say which one has a greater discounted amount unless we know discount percentages.

Hope this helps.
