In a certain year
In a certain year the United Nations’ total expenditures were $1.6billion. Of this amount, 67.8 percent was paid by the 6 highest-contributing countries, and the balance was paid by the remaining 153 countries. Was Country X among the 6 highest-contributing countries?
I. 56 percent of the total expenditures was paid by the 4 highest-contributing countries, each of which paid more than Country X.
II. Country X paid 4.8 percent of the total expenditures.
My Ques: got stuck in calculations. How to solve this within 2 mins?
- Top 4 paid out 56%, X not among top 4.
- X paid 4.8% of total.
The first statement is insufficient as we cannot derive any relation regarding X whatsoever.
So, answer will be either of B, C, E.
Statement II again gives nothing definite to us. So, option B is eliminated.
Now taking them together we can find that,
If top 4 paid 56%, that leaves 67.8-56=11.8% of total expenditures left. X paid 4.8% of total. Now X could be in the top six.
Country 5: 7%
Country 6: 4.8%
OR, it might not be in the top five at all.
Country 5: 6%
Country 6: 5.8%
Since, again it is indefinite whether X was a part of top 6, E is the answer.
