ModifiersQ9CrackVerbal
thank you jayaprakash for the explanation..but as you said if which refers to a singular noun, then it refers to mining and ” its” refers to environment r8??
Hi Anusha
Awesome explanations Jayaprakash! I am thrilled to see them 🙂
Large scale mining of metal and coal in the region has led to both acid rock drainage, acid water flowing out from abandoned mines, and the deposition of tailings, elements or compounds uncovered during mining, altering the receiving environment to its detriment , but are harmless if collected and disposed of in time.
A)acid water flowing out from abandoned mines, and the deposition of tailings, elements or compounds uncovered during mining, altering
B)which is the outflow of acidic water from abandoned mines, as well as the deposition of tailings, elements or compounds uncovered during mining, altering
C)the outflow of acidic water from abandoned mines, the deposition of tailings, elements or compounds uncovered during mining, which may alter
D)acid water flowing out from abandoned mines, the deposition of tailings, elements or compounds uncovered during mining, which may alter
E)which is the outflow of acidic water from abandoned mines , and the deposition of tailings, elements or compounds uncovered during mining, which may alter
The OA is (E).
My doubt is that does the last “which” in option (E) refer to mining or “tailings, elements or compounds” ? Also what does “are” in the last sentence in the question refer to? could you please provide a strong explanation why (E) is correct.
My Doubt:Option D:the deposition of tailings- is it an independent clause?explanation in crack verbal guide says it is a run on sentence.
isnt it a cause and effect statement ?so wont the usage of altering be correct?
which may alter-does which refer to tailings, elements or compunds?
Please help me with these three doubts.
Hi Anusha,
Hi Anusha
E) This statement says
thank you guru..the source is the SC guide provided by crack verbal institute.
OMG!! It’s a revelation for me.. i really did not recognize that “elements or compounds uncovered during mining” is an appositive modifier instead i thought it as a continuation. Thank you so much for that.
Hi jayaprakash
Not necessary Arpan.. A “which” can refer to a noun or a noun idea immediately before it 🙂
