Hi Anusha

Let us check the below sentence…when ever we have appositive modifier then we will remove and check for preceding noun..
Sentence:    Both Nehru, the prime minister of India and Gandhi, Father of the nation , who wears dhoti are good friends.

Here ‘Who’ Points back to Gandhi and not father of the nation..
Point out flaw in the above sentence if the sentence has any.

Similarly, in our sentence which points out to the deposition of tailings not to elements or compounds.

Please, check and  let me know.

Large scale mining of metal and coal in the region has led to both acid rock drainage, acid water flowing out from abandoned mines, and the deposition of tailings, elements or compounds uncovered during mining, altering the receiving environment to its detriment , but are harmless if collected and disposed of in time.

A)acid water flowing out from abandoned mines, and the deposition of tailings, elements or compounds uncovered during mining, altering

B)which is the outflow of acidic water from abandoned mines, as well as the deposition of tailings, elements or compounds uncovered during mining, altering

C)the outflow of acidic water from abandoned mines, the deposition of tailings, elements or compounds uncovered during mining, which may alter

D)acid water flowing out from abandoned mines, the deposition of tailings, elements or compounds uncovered during mining, which may alter

E)which is the outflow of acidic water from abandoned mines , and the deposition of tailings, elements or compounds uncovered during mining, which may alter

The OA is (E).

My doubt is that does the last “which” in option (E) refer to mining or “tailings, elements or compounds” ? Also what does “are” in the last sentence in the question refer to? could you please provide a strong explanation why (E) is correct.

My Doubt:Option D:the deposition of tailings- is it an  independent clause?explanation in crack verbal guide says it is a run on sentence.

isnt it a cause and effect statement ?so wont the usage of altering be correct?

which may alter-does which refer to tailings, elements or compunds?

Please help me with these three doubts.

Hi Anusha,

POE –
A) “altering the receiving environment” changes the intended meaning. Also it gives a sense that both drainage of acid rocks  and deposition of tailings lead to altering.
B) not in structure- Both A and B.
C) not in structure
D) not in structure
E) correct and properly structured. Both A, which ….., and B, which …..
In E which referes to “elements and compounds” which may alter…but are harmless…
What is the source ?

Hi Anusha

Here is My POE
Large scale mining of metal and coal in the region has led to both acid rock drainage, acid water flowing out from abandoned mines, and the deposition of tailings, elements or compounds uncovered during mining, altering the receiving environment to its detriment , but are harmless if collected and disposed of in time.

When I see the question Stem….The main Point i think about is IDIOM (Both ‘x’ and ‘y’)

This is one of the basic Idioms tested in GMAT.
A) I think, i will hold on to this
Both acid rock drainage, acid water flowing out from abandoned mines, and the deposition of tailings, elements or compounds uncovered during mining,
B) This statement says
Both ‘x’ as well as ‘y’, wrong idiom.  eliminate
c) This statement says
Both ‘x’ ,’y’   Again wrong Idiom      eliminate
D) This statement says
Both ‘x’ ,’y’   Again wrong Idiom      eliminate

E) This statement says

both acid rock drainagewhich is the outflow of acidic water from abandoned mines , and the deposition of tailings, elements or compounds uncovered during mining, which may alter the receiving environment to its detriment

Option ‘E’ is parallel compare to ‘A’ and i think  Which –> Its  so i think it should refer the singular noun…
Hope this gives the answer.
Last sentence is explaining about
Both acid rock drainage and the deposition of tailings are harmless if collected and disposed of in time.
@Mod: Kindly check and provide additional information.

OMG!! It’s a revelation for me.. i really did not recognize that “elements or compounds uncovered during mining” is an appositive modifier instead i thought it as a continuation. Thank you so much for that.

elements or compounds uncovered during mining
elements or compounds uncovered during mining

Hi jayaprakash

In this question which refers to deposition of tailings which is a phrase. Shouldn’t which refer to a single noun like tailings only

Not necessary Arpan.. A “which” can refer to a noun or a noun idea immediately before it 🙂
