Option D appears wrong to me, but it is the OA

In option-D, what does “it” refer to? Is it the cricket, chirps or surrounding temperatures.  No such ambiguity exists in Option E. It appears to be just wordy. So which one would you go for as your answer choice, a wordy or a supposedly wrong option.
