PS
Hi Aditya,
The student-professor ratio at a certain university was 25:4, but when the university expelled eighty students for acts of civil disobedience, seventeen professors quit in protest. Which of the following could be the new student-professor ratio at the university?
OA: C.
The explanation provided is too complicated to apply at the gmat exam. Can you suggest some feasible easy solution to solve such question?
Hi Nitesh,
Its not a tricky or difficult question, but a time-consuming one.
We just need to be smart here, try to do POE or Back Solving to get to the answer faster.
One thing to note here is, it is a could be question, so using the Back solving would be a better option here.
According to the question,
Lets take there are totally 25x –> number of students there and 4x —> number of professor.
given that,
(25x -80 )/(4x – 17)
So, if you notice in the denominator we have Even – Odd,
Even – odd can’t be even.
So eliminate the options A and D.
Now lets backsolve,
(25x -80 )/(4x – 17) = 33/5
125x – 400 = 132x – 561
7x = 161
x= 23.
So, x comes as an integer, so its totally fine.
So answer has to be C.
In GMAT you will have only one answer as right.
Its a could be question, so we need to figure out only one value.
So answer is C.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Junaid
