Sentence correction
Hi,
PFB
According to United States census data, while there was about one-third of mothers with young
children working outside the home in 1975, in 2000, almost two-thirds of those mothers were
employed outside the home.
A. while there was about one-third of mothers with young children working outside the home
in 1975, in 2000, almost two-thirds of those mothers were employed outside the home
B. there were about one-third of mothers with young children who worked outside the home
in 1975; in 2000, almost two-thirds of those mothers were employed outside the home
C. in 1975 about one-third of mothers with young children worked outside the home; in 2000,
almost two-thirds of such mothers were employed outside the home
D. even though in 1975 there were about one-third of mothers with young children who
worked outside the home, almost two-thirds of such mothers were employed outside the
home in 2000
E. with about one-third of mothers with young children working outside the home in 1975,
almost two-thirds of such mothers were employed outside the home in 2000
The correct answer is option C.
Doubt: options B and C have same structure, two sentences joined using ‘;’ .
Option C have “; in 2000,almost two-thirds of such mothers were employed outside the home” – A dependent clause and “in 1975 about one-third of mothers with young children worked outside the home” – An independent clause. How we can link each other. Also, is there any kind parallel structure exists ?
Please explain.
Hi Aditya,
The difference between B and C is in meaning of the sentence.
B – in 2000, almost two-thirds of THOSE mothers – those refers back to the entire noun phrase “one-third of mothers with young children who worked outside the home in 1975”
C – in 2000,almost two-thirds of such mothers – such refers back to the kind of mothers we are talking about – mothers with children
This sentence is not a test of parallelism
Thanks Admin…
I found one more approach, that is, “working” and “who worked” imply different meanings.
