Sentence correction

As business grows more complex, students majoring in specialized areas like those of finance and marketing have been becoming increasingly successful in the job market.

A. majoring in specialized areas like those of finance and marketing have been becoming increasingly

B. who major in such specialized areas as finance and marketing are becoming more and more

C. who majored in specialized areas such as those of finance and marketing are being increasingly

D. who major in specialized areas like those of finance and marketing have been becoming more and more

E. having majored in such specialized areas as finance and marketing are being increasingly

Doubt in options B and D.

Both sentences have their own intended meanings. But option D say Students who major in specialized areas like those of finance and marketing…. this is true as finance and marketing are subjects….and the sentence say areas same as the areas of finance and marketing.

Later if we consider tense, that is, present perfect tense the sentence is wrong.

However in option B – the meaning implies, Students as finance and marketing. How can students similar to subjects ?

With respect to tense, are becoming, B is more appropriate than  D.

Please clarify the meaning, whether I am approaching in right direction or not.

Hi Aditya,

Finance and marketing themselves are specializations or special areas. Special areas within finance and marketing doesn’t really make sense.

Also, option B says special areas such as finance and marketing (just that the such and the as have been separated). This means finance and marketing are given as examples of special areas (such as is used to provide examples). There’s no comparison between students and finance and marketing in this option.

Are becoming is present continuous tense indicating that the action is happening right now

Have been becoming is present perfect continuous tense and indicates that something started in the past and is continuing at the present time

The former makes more sense in the given context because this isn’t an action that started in the past and continued till date. Only as business grows complex, are students becoming more succesful

Hope this helps!

Thanks Admin .

What is the meaning of increasingly here in the sentence. Can be we use this as adverbial modifier and place it after “job market” ?

Also, Why we are replacing “increasingly” with “more and more”
