The OA is confusing.

Juan bought some paperback books that cost $8 each and some hardcover books that cost $25 each. If Juan bought more than 10 paperback books, how many hardcover books did he buy?
I. The total cost of hardcover books that Juan bought was at least $150
II. The total cost of all books that Juan bought was less than $260

In the second option the total amount is $260 which includes the cost of paperback i.e more than $80 and the cost of hardcover books(multiple of $25), then we can find a combination of these two within $260. then how is option 2 insufficient ?

Hi Ryan,

Your point would have been right, if the question said, Juan bought 10 paper backs and the total cost is 260.

But here carefully note the question, Juan bought MORE THAN 10 paper backs and the total cost is LESS THAN 260 dollars.

So, we can have many combinations like,

Paper back cost = 160

Hard cover = 75

or paperback cost = 100

hard cover cost = 150

So, it keep changing.

That’s why statement II is insufficient.

together it is sufficient. Because, he should have bought 6 hard cover books.

Hope this helps.
