Which one  is correct out of the following two sentences and why?

  1. Ian , a hot tempered tennis player charged the umpire and tried to crack the poor man’s skull with a racket.
  2. A hot tempered tennis player , Ian charged the umpire and tried to crack the poor man’s skull with a racket .

the first one needs a comma after “player” to separate out the modifier. But otherwise, I can’t see a difference.
