Why E is correct and D not
248. Under high pressure and intense heat, graphite, the most stable
form of pure carbon, changes into the substance commonly
referred to as diamond and remaining this way whether or not
the heat and pressure are removed.
A. remaining this way whether or not
B. remaining like that even as
C. remaining as such whether or not
D. remains in this way although
E. remains thus even when
thus is used for conclusion how E is correct and D is incorrect?
Hi Shilpi
The correct sentence in this context is “graphite retains its form even if heat and pressure are removed”. “If” and “When” can be used interchangeably in this context without changing the meaning. Hence “when” is appropriate and “although” is inappropriate in this context. Thus, option E is the correct answer.
“remains thus” means “remains as Diamond”.
If option D had read as “remains in this form even if/when” then option D would have been right as well. “In this form” is appropriate and “in this way” is inappropriate in this context.
Hi Sandeep and Shilpi,
The problem with saying “in this way” is that diamond is not a way of doing anything/way something happens. Diamond is a form of a substance.
