In the below question isn’t the pronoun “them” ambiguous as in referring to “astronomers” or “planets”?

In the past several years, astronomers have detected more than 80 massive planets, most of them as large or larger than Venus, which circle other stars?

a) most of them as large or larger than Venus , which circle

b) most of them as large or larger than Venus and circling

c) most of them at least as large as Venus , circling

d) mostly at least as large as Venus, which circle

e)  mostly at least as large as Venus, circling

Hi Siddhant,

There are correct answers on the GMAT that use pronouns. Hence it is recommended to not use pronouns as the first line of elimination. Whenever possible, rely on other rules for elimination.

You can eliminate options A and D based on the “which” rule. “Which” always refers to the immediately preceding noun, here Venus

Option E can be eliminated because “mostly” could also mean usually/generally

“at least as large” is a better way of saying “as large or larger than. Hence pick option C.
