In this question, what is ‘they’ referring to? Isn’t it ambiguous? I have been able to eliminate B,C and D because it uses ‘although’. Please clarify
Answer choice may be E.
A, B and C are out. As the line “cousins, often green and striped, or ……….” should define Heirloom tomatoes not the supermarket cousins. Also, Heirloom tomatoes and Cousins are both plural, for which the line “often green and striped, or ……….” is redundant.
D – Sentence incomplete. Subject verb is required after although.
Answer option left is E.
I hope this is the right one.
Thanks Aditya!
Hi Bharath,
It is important to understand the meaning of the sentence in SC.
Heirloom tomatoes, grown from seeds saved from the previous year, only look less appetizing than their round and red supermarket cousins, often green and striped, or have plenty of bumps and bruises, but are more flavorful
Meaning analysis:
2 types of tomatoes
1 – Heirloom. These are green and striped or have plenty of bumps and bruises. These look less appetizing. These are more flavorful though
2 – Heirloom’s cousins – These are round and red. These look more appetizing but are less flavorful
Now there are 2 ways to make the comparison between the above 2. We can say “The heirloom tomatoes look less appetizing but are more flavorful” or “Although the heirloom tomatoes look less appetizing, they are more flavorful”
However, the given sentence in the underlined part says “Heirlooms ONLY look less appetizing”. This needs to be followed by “but they are flavorful”
Answer options analysis:
Options A, B and C have placed “often green and striped” immediately after supermarket cousins. This placement leads us to interpret that the cousins are green and striped. But according to the sentence, heirlooms are green and striped. Hence eliminate these 3 options
Between D and E, “heirlooms have bumps and bruises” in E is a better construction than “heirlooms are with bumps and bruises”
Option E is the correct answer
