Hi Smarak,
Few doubts in your explanation.
In option (A) you mentioned that the tenses are “not parallel”. what does that mean?
In option (E) you mentioned that there is a “problem with had”. why is it so?
In option (D) you mentioned that “there is no end time limit for “Had””.  could you please explain this?

Hi Anusha

Here is My POE
The sentence is testing about Idiom Usage, Tenses and Sentence fragments.
Idiom:  In addition to ‘x’,’y’  x and y are Nouns or Noun Phrases

A) )having directed many of his own star vehicles, Clint Eastwood also directed films in which he did not appear, such as Mystic River and Letters from Iwo Jima, for which he had received.
In addition to having directed many of his own star vehicles(noun phrase), Clint Eastwood (Noun)

We don’t need having in the sentence.More over the main sentence is sentence fragment.

Eliminate ‘A’
B) Idiom Problem  Eliminate ‘B’
D)directing many of his own star vehicles, Clint Eastwood had  also directed films in which he did not appear, such as Mystic River and Letters from Iwo Jima, for which he had received

Both the clauses are in past perfect…

Eliminated ‘D’

E) directing many of his own star vehicles, Clint Eastwood also directed films in which he had not appeared, such as Mystic River and Letters from Iwo Jima, for which he received

The main sentence doesn’t have main verb….hence sentence fragment

Eliminate ‘E’

@MOD: Kindly check and provide additional information.

Let me clear your doubts.

1. There is no parallelism employed in this sentence. Parallelism is only when there is a list or a comparison.
2. The usage of “had” signifies the usage of the past perfect tense. Remember that past perfect tense can be used only when there are 2 actions in sequence with one another.
3. Same as 2. There is no time indicator to indicate the usage of past perfect tense 🙂
Hope that helps!

Hi Jayaprakash,
Thanks for the expalnation. But as you said options (A) and (E) are sentence fragments, could you please explain in more detail about this.

Hi Anusha

Clint Eastwood also directed films in which he had not appeared, such as Mystic River and Letters from Iwo Jima, for which he received

Similar to Present participial i.e., directing, past participial directed (most of the +ed ending verbs) are also not main verbs.

In the above sentence, ‘directed’ is past participial modifier. so this leads to sentence fragment.

Hope this helps.

Hi SaiKiran,
Thanks for the explanation. So the elimination is based only on usage of “had” r8? In that case it will be easy because i am confused a lot with parallelism, idiom usage.
