Why not option C

Found only in the Western Hemisphere and surviving through extremes of
climate, hummingbirds’ range extends from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, from sealevel
rain forests to the edges of Andean snowfields and ice fields at altitudes of
15,000 feet.
(A) Found only in the Western Hemisphere and surviving through extremes
of climate, hummingbirds’ range extends
(B) Found only in the Western Hemisphere, hummingbirds survive through
extremes of climate, their range extending
(C) Hummingbirds, found only in the Western Hemisphere and surviving
through extremes of climate, with their range extending
(D) Hummingbirds, found only in the Western Hemisphere and surviving
through extremes of climate, their range extends
(E) Hummingbirds are found only in the Western Hemisphere, survive
through extremes of climate, and their range extends

In option C, Hummingbirds being the Subject and their range extending correct verb. Can you tell me why Option B is right.

The meaning in option C is different from the intended meaning.

The hummingbirds were not found WITH their range extending.

Over here ‘extending’ is a modifier which modifies the previous clause, the usage of WITH is incorrect as it changes the meaning.

Thank you Nirvan!

In option A, “Found only in the Western Hemisphere and surviving through extremes of climate” modifies  hummingbirds’ range”

In option C, “Hummingbirds” is the subject. The phrases beginning with “found” and “with” are modifiers. The issue here is that there is no verb! This answer choice creates a sentence fragment.

In option D,  “Hummingbirds” doesn’t have a verb to go with it. “their range extends” is an independent clause here. It should be separated from the rest of the sentence by a semicolon.

Option E is an intended parallel list. However, “are found”, “survive” and “their range extends” are not parallel.

Hence option B is the correct answer.

Hope this helps!
